We caught up with Robbi McFaulds after his gig for the Coffee House Sessions Tour!
The Coffee House Sessions are a series of live acoustic and semi-acoustic performances from some of the UK’s hottest singer song-writers and acoustic musicians.
Join us every Wednesday in the Terrace bar to see newly signed artists perform live for free!
Last year we were joined by the likes of Seafret and Hudson Taylor to name a few…
How has the tour been for you so far?
It’s been brilliant! We’ve been to some good places, met some great people and big crowds seem to have enjoyed the music and the covers we’ve picked.
How do you choose which covers to perform?
The Superstition cover, the Stevie Wonder song, just came about from me and the boys messing about in my living room. It just came about then and seemed to work so we kept that in the set. The other covers were all from past experiences in other bands.
How did you choose which of your own songs to play as well?
I think I just picked a good mix of our own songs, that’s the best way to do it, for me anyway. It’s just however you feel to be honest, sometimes you want to do an upbeat one and sometimes you want to do one that’s pretty mellow or an acoustic one.
Have you changed which songs you’ve performed along the tour?
I think we’ve made some subtle changes but not too many. We mostly keep the same set as we thought we had quite a solid set at the start. So we thought we’d keep it and use that all the way through, but subtle changes yeah.
You’re from Scotland, how does the music scene and gigging up there compare to down south?
In Scotland there are quite a lot of the same acts all the time but outside Scotland – in London and the bigger places – there are more acts and more venues. So to get out of Scotland and exploring down and London has been great for me.
So you said you released an EP, could you tell me a little about that? How did you choose which songs went on it?
Well the majority of last year was all of the writing and recording and then that’s when I decided I had something I really liked and wanted to put out. It took me about a year so its been a long road for me but it’s been great.
Did you write songs specifically for the EP or did you have quite a big collection and choose from that?
A couple of the songs that are on there were specifically for that EP, but a couple were just written and I decided to stick them on there.
What made you decide to do music in the first place?
I don’t know actually, I think probably just reading about artists and big acts and watching them on the TV and stuff like that. It always kind of appealed to me, and that’s why I thought “right, I want to do that.”
What inspires you to write music?
Just things that are going on really. If you see a sign that that says something that sticks in your head, you can always right about it. Anything really! Netflix is always a great one to write on, if you are watching something and there’s something going on that you can relate to. Past experiences as well.
Have you been to any gigs in the past that have inspired you to gig in a certain way?
Yeah I’ve seen a lot of acts, some of my favourites are Ed Sheeran, John Legend, all those kinds of people, and I think that gives you a push to want to be on a stage and to want to be at that level. So that’s why you keep pushing and pushing. I’d definitely say that’s one of the best things you can do, is to watch your idols because they push you. They push you all the way in whatever you want to do.
Have you got any other plans, any tours or anything?
After the tour I’ll just keep writing and keep gigging and just keep going. I don’t know really, we’ll see what happens.
Do you have any ideas for another EP coming up? Or an album?
Yeah maybe an album this year. I’ll see where it goes from here but maybe an album after this.
Last of all, what is your main musical goal? Is there somewhere you want to be or is it just to be able to do this as your job?
It’s something I want to be at the top of. Obviously everybody wants to be at the top of their career, but yeah, I want to be at the top of my career. We’ll work at it and keep working hard on our fan base and keep putting records out and we’ll see where we can get.Upcoming Events
